FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do I need to be a member to participate?
Razz is open to all gentlemen, regardless of club affiliation.
How do I become a member?
Register for membership on this website. Once approved, you’ll have access to the Private Site.
Do I need a GHIN Handicap to participate?
The Razz does not use GHIN indexes for the Net games.
Your Razz scores are used to calculate your Razz Index (RI).
What tees do I play?
Your tee selection is determined by your Razz Index (RI).
If your RI is 4 or less, you’ll play from the BACK TEES.
If your RI is 5 or greater, you may move to the MIDDLE TEES.
What is the 75+ Rule?
If your combined age and Razz Index (RI) totals 75 or greater, you may play from ANY TEE.
However, moving up from your flight’s assigned tees will reduce your RI.
Examples:
1. Your RI is 9, which puts you in the 1st Flight. Your age is 72. When combined, your age and RI is 81. You qualify for the 75+ Rule. The 1st flight plays from the MIDDLE TEES. But, with the 75+ Rule, you may move to the FRONT TEES and play with a 3 stroke RI reduction (6 RI).
2. Your RI is 15, which makes you a 2nd Flight player. Your age is 65. When combined, your age and RI is 80. You qualify for the 75+ Rule. The 2nd Flight plays from the MIDDLE TEES. But, with the 75+ Rule, you may move to the FRONT TEES and play as a 12 RI. (3 stroke reduction)
3. Your RI is 19, which makes you a 3rd Flight player. Your age is 74. Your combined age and RI is 93. You qualify for the 75+ Rule. The 3rd Flight plays from the MIDDLE TEES. But, with the 75+ Rule, you may move to the FRONT TEES and play as a 16 RI. (3 stroke reduction)
What prevents players from adding strokes to increase their Razz Index?
Several methods are utilized to reduce the impact of “Sandbagging”. First, The Razz is a Gentlemen’s Game and is played with the expectation that every player abides by the rules. Additionally, the player’s actual hole-by-hole scores are reviewed and adjusted (if necessary) by the scoring program after the game is finalized. Prior to calculating each player’s game index, each score is adjusted according to the published Razz Rules. Only after the necessary adjustments are made does the scoring program calculate the player’s index for the game. That game’s index is then included in the Best 5 of the Last 10 formula that calculates the player’s current Razz Index for the next game. An unusually high score is rarely included in the RI calculation.
Whereas, a low score remains in the formula for at least 10 rounds.
How is my Razz Index affected if I don’t finish a hole?
A player who suffers a “blow-up hole” and picks up is still in the game…for the Skins Games. However, his score will not be totaled nor used for calculating his RI revision.
I was unable to complete the round. Am I expected to pay my entry fee?
Why were you unable to complete the round? Injury? Playing poorly? Family issue? Boss called?
When you withdraw because you’re playing poorly or simply don’t show up, you’ve likely prevented another player from participating in the game. Did you skip out on work or a client needs immediate attention? Hummm…maybe you should reconsider your priorities.
If you become ill or injured, well, that’s a different story.
Life happens, so consider the situation and do the right thing. Please realize that The Razz is about the easiest way to participate in tournament style golf…Register with an email or text message, show up, and play.
Again, this is a Gentlemen’s Game and entry fees are collected after the round. Regardless the situation, paying your entry fee will result in your played holes being scored for the Skins games and Proxies.
How do I establish my Razz Index?
Players must participate in 4 Razz games to become “established”.
However, that doesn’t mean you can’t win Skins, Medal or other prizes during that time.
New-to-the-game players are automatically issued a NET score of 2 over par for the course played. Your actual gross score is posted to the scoreboard. The scoring program then calculates your Index for the game.
Examples:
1. You post a score of 83 at Willis Case (Par 70)
2. Your NET score is automatically issued as 72
3. Your game index is recorded as 11. (83 minus 72 = 11)
Or,
1. You post a score of 67 at Overland Park (Par 72)
2. Your NET score is automatically issued as 74
3. Your game index is recorded as +7. (74 minus 67 = +7)
After participating in 4 Razz games, your 4 recorded indexes are averaged,
resulting in your established Razz Index.
Your established Razz Index is calculated after each game, using the average
of your Best 5 of the Last 10 rounds
